As the Fourth of July approaches, communities across Texas are preparing for a holiday filled with fireworks, celebrations, barbecues, and gatherings with loved ones. To ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone in our district, it is important to prioritize fire prevention and safety throughout your celebrations.
Texas summers bring high temperatures and dry conditions, which means even a small spark can quickly become a serious hazard. By practicing safe firework handling, grilling responsibly, and staying aware during outdoor activities, we can help protect our families, neighbors, and community.
Firework Safety
Keep a strong water source nearby to extinguish any potential fires.
Light fireworks one at a time and maintain a safe distance immediately after lighting.
Keep fireworks away from homes, dry grass, trees, and other flammable materials.
Soak both used and unused fireworks in a bucket of water for a few hours before disposal.
Consider safer alternatives for children, such as:
Glow sticks
Confetti poppers or cannons
Colorful streamers
Silly string
Check local firework restrictions before planning any display.
Firework violations will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
Here are some other tips to keep you and your family safe.
Boating and Swimming Safety
Always supervise children when they are in or near water.
Ensure everyone knows how to swim and never swim alone.
Always wear life jackets when boating, regardless of swimming ability or comfort level.
Keep a first aid kit nearby when enjoying pools, lakes, or boating activities.
BBQ Safety
Keep grills at least 10 feet away from your home, wooden fences, decks, and other flammable materials.
Never leave a grill unattended while in use.
Use long-handled tools to help prevent burns.
Keep a fire extinguisher or water source nearby.
Drinking Safety
If you plan to drink alcohol, do so responsibly.
Never operate fireworks, grills, boats, or recreational vehicles while under the influence.
Plan ahead to avoid drinking and driving:
Designated drivers
Ride services
Taxis or other transportation options
Drinking and driving is not only against the law, but it puts yourself and others at serious risk.
As we celebrate Independence Day, please also be mindful of neighbors and pets who may be sensitive to loud fireworks. Keeping pets indoors and cleaning up firework debris helps keep our district safe, clean, and welcoming for everyone.
The District wishes everyone a happy and safe Independence Day!
